We discussed the growing needs on forestry sciences in the future especially in the emerging countries characterized by high population and domestic markets. Linking forestry sciences to policy need to be enhanced and actually this important topic has been intensively discussed during Pre-Conference Training Workshop on: “Adaptation of Forests to Climate Change: Working effectively at the Interface of Forest Science and Forest Policy”, held in Umea, Sweden on 25 to 28 August 2008 in which I had an opportunity to attend (Thanks to IUFRO SPDC) as one of the participants. Cultivating Sengon trees on a small piece of land

Cultivating Sengon trees (Paraserianthes falcataria syn. Falcataria moluccana) on a small piece of land

Sengon is one of the favourite trees grown by local people especially in Java due to its fast growing, multipurpose uses and strong demands. Also, a professor from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine IPB, Agik Suprayogi, has grown this timber since three year ago in a small piece of bareland and the trees grows very well already reaching dimensions ready for harvesting. Seedlings for establishing this small plantation were supplied from the nursery of Department of Silviculture IPB. In a broader perspective, planting trees in lots of small pieces of abandoned and bare lands outside forest lands, i.e. Trees outside Forest (TOF) will benefits the local economy as well as environment. Let’s go planting trees for improving livelihood as well as environment. A popular book on Sengon (in Bahasa Indonesia) is available in the lokal bookstore.
